Mature themes
Crime, cruelty, death, suicide and self-harm, discrimination, and crude humour.
A content label, not a money rating. We read it from each game's official age-rating descriptors and show the strongest level any board gives.
What it covers
Confronting subject matter that isn't simply violence, sex or drugs: crime and cruelty, death and grief, mental health, suicide and self-harm, bullying and discrimination, dark fantasy, and at the mild end crude or slapstick humour.
How the rating boards label it
Australia's Classification Board groups these as 'themes': 'Very mild themes' at G, 'Mature themes' at M and 'High impact themes' at R 18+, with specific advice such as 'bullying themes', 'crude humour', 'mental health themes', 'suicide references' and 'self-harm'.
The ESRB uses Comic Mischief (slapstick or playfully suggestive humour), Crude Humor (vulgar or 'bathroom' humour) and Mature Humor (adult humour, including sexual references).
PEGI's Discrimination descriptor, for depictions likely to encourage hatred, always means PEGI 18.
Mild, moderate and strong
Mild: slapstick or crude humour, and very mild or mild themes (ESRB Comic Mischief or Crude Humor, ACB G or PG).
Moderate: mature themes, or adult humour (ESRB Mature Humor, ACB M).
Strong: strong or high-impact themes such as suicide, self-harm or cruelty shown in detail (ACB MA 15+ or R 18+, PEGI 18).
