It Takes Two

Released 26 March 2021 Developer Hazelight Studios Publisher Electronic Arts

A cooperative adventure for exactly two players, played on one screen or online. A couple on the brink of divorce are turned into dolls and have to work together through imaginative levels where each player has different abilities, with puzzles, platforming and mini-games along the way. It is aimed at pairs of players such as friends or a parent and an older child, and the story deals with a marriage breaking down.

  • 9/ 10

    GameSpot

    Andrew King · 24 March 2021

Rated it among the best 3D platformers since Super Mario Odyssey, praising how often it brings in new co-operative ideas.

  • 9.3/ 10

    Game Informer

    Andrew Reiner · 24 March 2021

Called it a standout co-op adventure with a constant stream of fresh gameplay ideas and an emotional story about a couple's split, though the core platforming is less reliable than it should be.

    Nintendo Life

    Roland Ingram · 2 November 2022 · Switch · Great

Found the Switch version a satisfying port of a strong co-op game, with forgiving platforming and constant new mechanics, though the visuals are downgraded and the cutscenes long.

Safety & parental controls

Who can talk to your child, and what can they buy?

  • Chat: not recorded
  • No contact with strangers
  • No user-made content
  • Needs an online account

Online play is only with a friend who has joined through the Friend's Pass on the same platform; EA's page describes no matchmaking with strangers, and I found no mention of built-in chat, so most pairs talk over a console or app voice chat. An EA account is required (on Steam it is linked to your Steam account). Content: cartoonish fantasy violence, mild coarse language and a storyline about a couple's divorce, rated PG in Australia and T in the US.
