Never-ending

Built never to end

The game has no end because it makes money while you keep playing.

Caution · Built to push spending

When a game earns from your ongoing time, it has no reason to give you an ending.

What it does to the fun

There's no last level, so there's never a natural moment to stop and feel done. Like a race where someone keeps moving the finish line, each goal you reach reveals the next, and new seasons can wipe the slate clean. Over time the game can feel more like upkeep than adventure. A game with an ending lets you put the controller down satisfied.

What you're actually buying

Ongoing access or ongoing engagement. There is no finish to reach, so the price is never complete.

How it works

Bill by the minute, and a game never needs an ending, only a reason to keep the meter running. Flat monthly fees inverted the incentive again: don't limit hours, fill them. Library subscriptions pay studios by engagement, not units sold. Live-service games (games run as an ongoing service rather than a finished product) merge subscription, free-to-play whales and DLC into a model where a finished game stops selling and a forever game never has to. The result is that players stop finishing games and start maintaining them.

When it's fine

When the game is open-ended because it is a toy or sandbox you chose, not because endless play is how it earns.

Where it came from

Time-billed worlds (MUD1, Habitat, Neverwinter Nights on AOL) were built sticky, social and grindy. Ultima Online (1997), EverQuest (1999) and World of Warcraft (2004) flipped the goal from finishing to staying. Game Pass-style libraries pay studios by engagement. GTA Online (1 October 2013) reportedly out-earned story DLC so completely that Rockstar shelved expansions, with analysts estimating the mode earned over $500 million in a single year. Without enough spenders there is no slow decline, just an off switch: Concord was pulled 14 days after launch. By contrast, SimCity (1989) had no win condition because the sale was already made.

Historical prices and revenues are in US dollars at the time unless marked A$.
