How it makes money
Caution: built to push spending
You buy the game once (about A$47 for the PC bundle that includes both the Java and Bedrock editions, and A$10.95 on iPhone and iPad), and the base game is complete without further spending. On top of that, Bedrock players can buy Minecoins with real money to spend in the Marketplace, where approved creators sell worlds, skin packs and texture packs, and Realms is a monthly subscription for a private online world (A$5.99 to A$12.99 a month on the App Store). Marketplace spending has no upper limit, but none of it is needed to play.
The Marketplace, launched in 2017, sells worlds, mini-games, skins and texture packs made by vetted Partner Program creators for Minecoins. Wikipedia reports more than 1.7 billion downloads and US$500 million in revenue by 2022.
Realms is an optional monthly subscription for a private online world you share with invited friends; on the Australian App Store 'Realms Plus' for you plus 10 friends is A$12.99 a month and a smaller plan for you plus 2 friends is A$5.99.
Marketplace Pass is an optional subscription that gives access to a rotating catalogue of Marketplace content (price not checked). Minecraft is also included in Xbox Game Pass on PC.
Java and Bedrock editions are sold together for PC at A$46.95 on the Xbox/Microsoft Store (Australia); the iPhone and iPad version is A$10.95. The game is complete without any further purchase.
Marketplace items on Bedrock Edition are priced in Minecoins, which are bought with real money in packs from the in-game store, the platform store or prepaid cards. Prepaid Minecoin cards are also sold at Australian retailers.

Single-player worlds and invite-only Realms keep play to people you choose. Public multiplayer servers, which are run by third parties and not by Mojang, let children meet and text-chat with strangers and are not checked by Mojang. Marketplace content comes from vetted creators, but mods and downloaded maps for Java Edition are not. Multiplayer and chat permissions are managed through the child's Microsoft (Xbox) account and Microsoft Family settings, and purchases of Minecoins can be limited there or on the device's own store.
