Axie Infinity
Released March 2018 Developer Sky Mavis
A blockchain game in which you collect, breed and battle cartoon axolotl-like creatures called Axies, which are NFTs held in a crypto wallet. It became the best-known 'play-to-earn' game in 2021, when players could earn tokens that could be sold for real money. Today it runs as seasonal online competitions (Axie Classic and Axie Origins) with token prizes, and it is aimed at adults who understand crypto.
How it makes money
Harmful: chance, compulsion or exploitation
This is not an ordinary game purchase. To compete you need Axies, which are NFTs bought and sold for cryptocurrency on Sky Mavis's own marketplace (Sky Mavis takes a 4.25% fee on trades), and prices follow the crypto market: a starting team was estimated at about US$400 in February 2020, and the cheapest Axie was around US$20 by March 2022. In 2021 players earned a token called SLP that could be sold for cash, which drew many people in the Philippines to treat the game as income; SLP then lost over 99% of its peak value in February 2022. In March 2022 hackers stole about US$620 million from the Ronin network that carries the game (the FBI blamed North Korean groups), and Sky Mavis reimbursed users afterwards. Daily players fell from a peak of 2.7 million to about 250,000 by April 2023, and Sky Mavis removed 'play-to-earn' wording from its marketing. In October 2026, Axie Origins season 19 offers the top 2,000 players a shared pool of 80,000 bAXS, a non-transferable token backed one-for-one by AXS that can be converted to AXS for a fee, and AXS itself trades at about US$1 compared with a peak of US$165 in November 2021.
How you pay
- Play-to-earn
Earning crypto is the central promise: SLP in 2021, and bAXS prize pools today (80,000 bAXS shared by the top 2,000 players of Origins season 19). Sky Mavis dropped 'play-to-earn' wording from its marketing after the 2022 collapse.
- Cash trading
Axies are NFTs traded for cryptocurrency on Sky Mavis's marketplace, which takes a 4.25% fee on trades; AXS tokens trade on public exchanges.
Techniques it uses to keep you paying or playing
- Game currency
The economy runs on several tokens (SLP, AXS and the non-transferable bAXS), so what things cost in dollars changes with the crypto market.
- Collect all
Axies are collected and bred, and rare traits such as Mystic parts (a 7% chance on each body part of an Origin Axie) add to the chase.
minor part of the game - FOMO timers
Seasons last about eight weeks, and limited events such as Terrariums (24 October to 7 November 2026) give bonuses to certain Axies and accessories.

You play against other people online, and a Sky Mavis Account (for registration) and a crypto wallet (to hold assets) are needed. Money here is real, and blockchain transfers are generally irreversible. Sky Mavis's own Ronin Wallet app is rated 17+ on the App Store. We could not find the publisher's minimum age or any parental controls, so treat the game as one for adults. Ronin is closing its Waypoint wallet type, and holders had until 16 October 2026 to move their assets themselves.
